Katy: Heady Bed is custom upholstered headboards…. But even better.
Mom: Because there are so many possibilities.
Katy: Well it was all my mom’s idea… I can’t take any credit.
Mom: I have come from a long line of eccentric dreamers. (Katy fixing mom’s hair) I used so much spray just trying to puff it up this morning (laughing in the background).
Katy: She just got done designing her dream log cabin. She wanted all new furniture, all cool stuff… she turned out to be a great designer. I never knew. So she came to me with this idea. She hated everything else she found in headboards. I thought it was brilliant and I thought we could make something of that.
Mom: I watch a lot of design shows and I saw designers carrying big headboards up narrow attic steps and I thought that there has to be a better way.
Katy: That’s how it started.
Mom: And I would like a nice headboard for my new cabin too.
Katy: I call you creative slash quality control and operations and I’m more marketing/PR/sales.
Mom: I kind of think of it as I’m the manufacturer… the common laborer and she’s in the high tower in Chicago.
Katy: The website is super easy. So there is just four simple steps. First one is pick your panel size. We’ve got a few options for you to choose from and then you can pick if you want your bed to be long or the regular size of your bed. Ya, any kind of design if you want it to be dramatic or not. That’s it and then you can pick your fabric. We’ve learned so much about each other…
Mom: I’ve learned how creative and talented my daughter really is. She’s amazing.
Katy: Wow – I didn’t know that. I think you’re the creative one. Mom’s a perfectionist.
Mom: I am? (Laughing) Down the road I just want to sustain this and make it huge and make it successful.
Katy: I just want it to keep getting better and better. Constantly new things; better headboards. I think there’s definitely always been a need. Really, we feel like there just needed to be better in headboards.
